When children sit on adult chairs or in a traditional high chair, they lose contact with the floor. Children’s legs are dangling in mid air, which makes it difficult for them to move and interact around the table. In traditional chairs older children have to raise their arms and shoulders to eat, which is both awkward and tiring

Tripp Trapp® is the chair that grows with the child™. It’s sturdy and gives perfect support at every stage. An adjustable seat and footrest give proper support, and the confidence to move around freely.

Comes in LOTS of colours including cherry, white, white wash, natural, walnut lime, turquoise, black and red.

Sterilizing Your Baby’s Bottles

By Robin O’Brien

Mothers who breastfeed needn’t worry too much about contaminated milk. Provided the mother is healthy and bathes each day, the breast milk she gives her baby will always be fresh and, most importantly, contain her own anti-bodies that ward off germs. Mothers who choose to bottle-feed their baby aren’t automatically providing this protection against infection. Therefore, cleanliness is paramount when you bottle-feed your baby.

Does this mean a mother who bottle-feeds must be somewhat paranoid; always on the look out for any germs that might be lingering about, waiting to do her baby harm? Of course not. A mother just needs to follow a few basic steps to ensure that bottle-feeding her baby is a happy and safe experience. The most important of these steps is to sterilize your baby‘s bottles.

Before your baby is born you should purchase a good set of bottles and nipples. You should buy the best that you can afford. Remember that the nipple is what your baby will latch on to, so the nipple will experience a lot of wear-and-tear. Also, buy the larger sized bottles; your baby will soon out-grow the smaller ones. The most important item you should buy, however, is a bottle sterilizer.

There are several types on the market. You can buy a cheap and simple model that you just put in your microwave. The advantage with this type of sterilizer is that it is cheap. It also works perfectly adequately. The disadvantages are that you must ensure that you clean your microwave, especially after cooking spicy food; you don’t want to upset your baby’s stomach. Also portability is limited; it’s not always very convenient to travel with bottle, diapers, wet-wipes, formula and a microwave! You can also buy an electric sterilizer.

Another type of sterilizer you can purchase is the electric model. You wash your baby’ bottles and then pop them into a plastic tray which is then inserted into the sterilizer. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before use. You’ll need to use the sterilizer once, without any bottles when you first use it. Also, only put the amount of water inside the sterilizer that the manufacturer instructs. It’s tempting to put in more, but don’t. It’s important that all the water is turned into steam and evaporates. Any water that’s left behind to form a pool at the bottom of the sterilizer can provide a reservoir in which germs can breed. The advantages with an electric model are that is more or less self-cleaning, unlike a microwave – which is also used for cooking. It is somewhat easier to take on a trip. It’s not too heavy and you can always find somewhere to plug it in. The main disadvantage is cost.

The third type of sterilizer is an electric/microwave combination. It’s basically an electric model but you can take out the inner container and put it into a microwave. The main advantages for this type are those of both the microwave and electric ones mentioned above. The main disadvantage is price. This model tends to be the most expensive.

There are other measures you need to undertake to ensure a germ free feed for your baby, but without doubt, for every day use, a sterilizer will be your most important purchase for safe and healthy bottle-feeding your baby.

Breastfeeding is always preferable to bottle feeding, but if you are about to start bottle feeding your baby you should first talk to your midwife about the advantages and disadvantages of bottle feeding. Here are some bottle feeding tips to help get you started.

There are three types of infant formula. Powdered formula is the cheapest and the most widely used. You have to mix the powder with sterilized water. Concentrated formula is in liquid form. Like powdered formula, you have to first mix it with sterilized water before feeding it to your baby. It is more expensive than powdered infant formula. The third type is read-to-feed infant formula. You simply open the carton and feed it to your baby. It is the most expensive of the three types of infant formula.

Always follow the mixing instructions provided. It is sometimes tempting to add a little bit more, especially if you believe your child is extra hungry. But infant formula has been specially prepared to give your baby the correct dosage of ingredients, so you shouldn’t deviate; giving too much formula can be bad for your baby, especially over the long term.

Never use any infant formula that has passed its sell-by date.

Always use clean plastic or glass bottles. These should have previously been washed in hot soapy water and then sterilized. There are various sterilizing devices on the market. Some electrical ones – the easiest to use by far – just require you to place the cleaned bottles in a plastic holder. You close the lid and turn it on. A light will usually indicate when the bottles have been sterilized. You can also buy plastic sterilizers that are designed to be used in a microwave. If you have neither, then you can sterilize your baby’s milk bottle by placing them is a saucepan of boiling water and leaving them in it for 5 minutes.

To prepare formula, boil water for five minutes and cool it before mixing it with powdered or concentrated formula. If you are using bottles with disposable liners, throw away the liner after use. You can store prepared infant formula in the fridge for up to 48 hours. You can reheat the infant formula by running it under a hot tap. Never warm your baby’s milk using a microwave; it can get too hot.

The old fashioned way of testing the temperature of your baby’s milk still works best; simply shake a few drops on to the underside of your wrist. If it feels warm but not hot it is ready to give to your baby.

When feeding your baby, make sure her head is a little higher than her tummy. You should keep the bottom of the bottle raised so that the nipple stays full of milk at all times, so that air doesn’t get in. If your baby drinks formula mixed with air she may spit up. Hold your baby close and look into her eyes as you would do when breastfeeding.

Finally, bottle feeding has one huge advantage over breastfeeding. That is other members of the family can bottle feed your baby. It’s a great way to get dad and older siblings to get involved care for baby.

There is no doubt that breastfeeding is best for baby. Infant formula can’t offer the same health benefits as breast milk. However, many mothers don’t breastfeed – for many reasons – and are they failing to provide the best for their child and does bottle feeding offer any advantages at all for a mother or child? The answer is, yes, bottle feeding does have its advantages.

First off, if you are a mother who has chosen not to breastfeed or who can’t breastfeed, you must never, ever feel guilty about doing so. Nurturing a child involves far more than breastfeeding. You can also rest assured that the infant formula on sale today is the closest it’s ever been to breast milk. Here are some of the advantages to bottle feeding.

Today’s infant formula comes fortified with many nutrients that are low or absent in many mother’s breast milk. Many mothers are too tired and stressful in the first few months after birth to pay much attention to their diet – in fact, many mothers’ diet can be less than ideal before they were pregnant. Therefore many important minerals and vitamins may be found in low levels or even absent in breast milk. Infant formula comes fortified with iron and vitamin D. Fact: Iron-fortified infant formulas have actually been credited for the declining incidence of anemia in infants.

Babies who are breastfed are fed more frequently than those that are fed infant formula. This is because infant formula takes longer to digest than breast milk. This has the advantage of giving mother more time to rest between feed times.

Many breastfeeding mothers are anxious as to whether or not her baby is getting enough milk. Mothers who give their child infant formula don’t have this concern. A mother who bottle feeds her baby knows exactly how much she has fed her child and can rest easy knowing her child has received its recommended daily allowance.

A woman’s life changes after childbirth. Bottle feeding at least allows a mother to return to a semblance of her previous life. She can wear the clothes she wants, eat exactly what she wants and take any medication she wants to.

Breastfeeding a baby in public can be very embarrassing for many mothers, so much so, that many spend more time than they would like sequestered inside the family home. Mother’s who bottle feed don’t have to worry about prying eyes when feeding their child in public or have to worry about finding a discreet feeding room when at work or shopping.

Lovemaking can be difficult for some breastfeeding mothers. Many find leaky breasts and sore nipples are not conducive to lovemaking. Also, hormonal changes brought about by breastfeeding can leave her vagina dry.

The above are just some of the advantages of bottle feeding. If you do bottle feed your baby never let anyone deride you for your decision to do so. Remember, there are many things more important in the physical and mental development of your baby than breastfeeding.

Many bottle feeding problems are directly related to the lack of technique employed by a mother. What can seem insignificant details can actually impact on how your baby feeds. A lack of expertise can lead to stress on your baby and therefore she may not be getting all the nutrition she needs.

Testing the temperature of the milk is vital. Shake the bottle well and put a little of the milk on the inner side of your wrist. It should feel slightly warm but never hot. We’ve all seen this iconic image many times, amongst family, friends or on television but it really is still the best way of testing for the optimal temperature of bottle milk. If the milk is less than body temperature your baby may feel disinclined to drink it. If the milk is to hot there is a risk of injuring your baby‘s mouth and gullet.

Are you sitting comfortably? If yes; then good. If not; then why not? Feeding your baby can take a long time so you should find a position that is comfortable for both you and your baby. Your baby will feel best when you hold her close to you in a semi reclining position. The baby‘s head should not be titled too far forward or too far back: too far forward and your baby will have difficulty swallowing; to far back and excess milk may run down your baby’s face down into its ears or back up its nose.

Don’t force the nipple into your baby‘s mouth. Try to encourage your baby to open her mouth by touching her lips with the nipple (something that breastfeeding mother’s need to do also). The baby‘s tongue should be under the nipple. If not, gently take out the nipple and try again. During the feed, monitor your baby’s sucking action and ensure that the tongue is always on top of the nipple: young babies have a tendency to move the tongue on top when they cry.

Breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to get a proper latch; that is the nipple should be well inside the mouth with the nipple at the top and back of the throat (it is the areola the baby actually sucks, not the nipple). It is similar with bottle feeding. Make sure the nipple is well inside. Don’t pull back as your baby will not get a good suction.

During the feed, make sure that air bubbles are flowing into the bottle, replacing the milk that is drunk. If you can’t see any air bubbles, while she’s feeding, slowly loosen the nipple ring (the part that attaches the nipple to the bottle) until you can see bubbles. Take care not to loosen it too much, as this will cause the milk to leak all over him.

You should allow for ‘pit stops’ during the feed. Your baby will probably stop sucking several times during the feed. During these times you should try to gently burb your child. If she complains then refrain from burping her until after the feed.

Finally, take your time. Don’t try to rush your baby or she will get stressed. Remember, some babies stop and start during the feed. By paying close attention you’ll be able to recognise the sign that your baby has finished its feed.
